Confessions of a Shopaholic

Confessions of a ShopaholicI wonder if there is a woman who was taught from her early childhood how to save money and not spend it on things she didn’t need? As a women, we lack lots of things all the time, starting from every day stare in our closet trying to figure out what to wear and then complain how we have nothing to wear and finally we end up in expensive department store buying some cute outfit. Well, not only outfit, as what good is an outfit alone without matching shoes, purse or jewelry?

Rebecca Bloomwood is a financial journalist who gives people advice how to save their money and manage their debt. The only secret she has that she is in a big financial debt herself. She keeps hiding account statements from her bank, thinking that she can get away with it. As we all know, nobody can really hide from banks and finally she had to face them and arrange something in order to pay off her debt.

While this book is very amusing, funny and easy to read, I couldn’t help but wonder if that was actually story about lots of other women and about me at some points in our lives. It is easy to spend money, but it is so hard to earn it and pay your debt off. When you go to the store, everything looks so shiny and beautiful, you just have to buy something. I also found funny situation when Rebecca was getting ready to go for a trip with her boyfriend and it was a weekend trip (something like that) but she had big luggage full of cloths for each scenario she could think of (rainy or sunny day, breakfast, lunch, dinner, tennis etc.). I was laughing when I read that, but then the other day when I went somewhere for a weekend, I had a big luggage myself, as only shoes take up a lots of room (sandals, running shoes, slippers, flip-flops etc.) Then, if I sleep in a hotel, I must have all my own shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, foot cream, facial moisturizer, night cream… now when I think of it, I take lots of stuff myself. I recognized my girlfriends and myself in that book and it was very funny to read it. I love the book and Sophie Kinsellas’ writing style.

So, here’s my personal message to Sophie Kinsella: “It is not so hard to write a book, please continue writing about Shopaholic as I need something funny and entertaining to read!”

Well, I’ve never written a book myself, but I would imagine it is not so hard.
